The Liver's Role: How It Processes Fats and Carbs

Which Organ Takes Glucose out of the Blood and Stores It as Glycogen

Absorbing and Storing Energy: How the Body Controls Glucose

Editor's note: Physicians have a special place among the thinkers who have elaborated the argument for intelligent design. Perhaps that's because, more than evolutionary biologists, they are familiar with the challenges of maintaining a functioning complex system, the human body. With that in mind, Evolution News is delighted to offer this series, "The Designed Body." For the complete series, see here. Dr. Glicksman practices palliative medicine for a hospice organization.

Schematic two-dimensional cross-sectional view of glycogen: A core protein of glycogenin is surrounded by branches of glucose units. The entire globular granule may contain around 30,000 glucose units.[1]

The Liver & Blood Sugar :: Diabetes Education Online

The liver both stores and produces sugar…

The liver acts as the body’s glucose (or fuel) reservoir, and helps to keep your circulating blood sugar levels and other body fuels steady and constant. The liver both stores and manufactures glucose depending upon the body’s need. The need to store or release glucose is primarily signaled by the hormones insulin and glucagon.

Your Liver

The Liver Makes Bile

As you probably know, the digestive system does more than just move food through your body until it's time for a trip to the bathroom. During digestion, your body takes everything your body needs from the food you eat. Fat is one of the things the body gets from food.

Bile, a digestive juice produced by the liver, helps the body absorb fat into the bloodstream. You'll find this thick, yellow-green substance in the gallbladder, where it's stored until the body needs some to digest fats.

Liver Glycogen

The glucose stored in the liver serves as a buffer for blood glucose levels. Therefore, if the blood glucose levels start to get low because you have not consumed food for a period of time, the liver is able to release glucose into the bloodstream to maintain healthy levels. Blood glucose levels are tightly regulated because glucose is the primary energy source for the central nervous system. Blood glucose also is important for sustaining brain functioning. If the body reserves of glucose deplete, a process called gluconeogenesis will take place. During gluconeogenesis, glucose is synthesized from molecules that are not carbohydrates. Often, this means the body will break down muscle fibers to obtain the molecules to produce glucose.

Glycogen is the fuel reserve that keeps our body running. Glucose, obtained from carbohydrates in our diet, provides the energy we need throughout the day. Sometimes, the glucose in our body runs low, or even is depleted. When that happens, the body pulls the needed energy from glycogen stores in muscle and liver tissue, converting the glycogen into glucose. Exercise, illness, and some dietary habits, can cause the glycogen stores to be depleted more quickly. Steps to restore the depleted glycogen can vary depending on the underlying reasons for the depletion.
