American Toad Care Guide

American Toad Care Guide

American toads, Bufo americanus, make great first amphibian pets. They are easy to keep, inexpensive, and can be found nearly anywhere in the United States. They do have requirements, and deserve respect and attention like all pets.

Toads captive bred and hatched will be healthier and parasite free. If you acquire toads from the wild they may be infected, or harmful. It is always safer and more beneficial to spend the few extra dollars to buy one that has been already kept in captivity. Toad Food

Bufo americanus Holbrook, 1836

The American toad (Anaxyrus americanus, formerly Bufo americanus[2]) is a common species of toad found throughout the eastern United States and Canada. It is divided into three subspecies—the eastern American toad (A. a. americanus), the dwarf American toad (A. a. charlesmithi), and the rare Hudson Bay toad (A. a. copei). Recent taxonomic treatments place this species in the genus Anaxyrus instead of Bufo.[2][3][4]

Giant Toad
Bufo marinus

Description: The Giant Toad (a.k.a. Marine Toad or Cane Toad) is the largest of the frogs and toads found in Florida. The giant toad is not native to the United States. It was originally released in the U.S. in sugar cane fields to help control “white grubs,” larvae of pest Scarabaeidae. B. marinus became established in southern Florida as result of accidental release of about 100 specimens from the stock of a pet dealer at Miami airport in 1955, and by subsequent releases by pet dealers in the 1960s (Krakauer, 1968). Giant Toads are a highly predacious exotic species that will eat all types of native frogs and toads. This species is skilled at locating all types of food, they have even been known to eat pet food.

Cane Toads, Cane Toad Pictures, Cane Toad Facts

The much maligned venomous cane toads earned their bad reputation shortly after being released into the Australian ecology in 1935 with the hope that they would control the destructive cane beetle population. They turned out to be failures at controlling beetles, but remarkably successful at reproducing and spreading themselves.

Toad Food

I discovered this dish when I first moved over here to England. I had never heard of or eaten it before, although I had eaten sausages and Yorkshire pudding, just not together. The combination of the two is, well…heavenly! Don’t forget the mash and onion gravy! Cumberland sausage is my sausage of choice as it has a nice spicy flavour that goes well with the batter.

BioKIDS

What do they look like?

American toads have short legs, stout bodies, and thick skins with noticeable warts. These warts can be colored red and yellow. The warty skin contains many glands that produce a poisonous milky fluid, providing these toads with excellent protection from many of their predators. This poison is only harmful if it is swallowed or if it gets in the eyes, but it can make many animals very sick. (Dickerson, 1906; Le Clere, 2000; Matson, 2002; Oliver, 1955)

Toad In The Hole Recipe

Another Bero recipe popular in my family. This is usually served as one very filling portion for one person, but can easily be two or three if you add side dishes. I usually have about 1/3 to 1/2 a cup of batter left over to make a few pancakes the next morning.

Horned Toads (Short-Horned Lizards), Horned Toad (Short-Horned Lizard) Pictures, Horned Toad (Short-Horned Lizard) Facts

The short-horned lizard is often referred to as a “horned toad” or “horny toad” because its squat, flattened shape and short, blunt snout give it a toad-ish look. There are over a dozen recognized species found in the deserts and semi-arid environments of North and Central America, from southern Canada to Guatemala.
