Do Wine Makers Really Walk Over Grapes With Their Feet?

Melissa K. asks: Do high end wine makers really have people walk all over grapes with their bare feet? Perhaps no image is more synonymous with the act of wine making than that of a person smushing grapes with their bare feet to extract the precious juices contained therein (in the grapes, not the inevitably sweaty feet). But did winemakers [...]

California Grape Stomps

California Grape Stomps Celebrate the Crush, It's a Rush

Annual Grape Stomps in California provide an exciting experience enjoyed by all ages. Several of the grape stomp events have categories for children so they get to feel the soft grapes squish between their feet and get to stomp on the precious grapes to see what it's like to make grape juice or wine. Of course nobody drinks the products made from these events. It is strictly done for enjoyment and entertainment, but you get to understand how wine once was made before mechanization and how the time honored tradition became so important to those who sought this desirable beverage. In California, wine-making spans the entire state and has become an important industry, along with table grapes, to the California economy both for sales, exports and tourism.

When was the last year that grapes were crushed by foot in Europe? | Ask Dr. Vinny | Wine Spectator

Smashing Grapes with Feet

Wine Spectator's expert describes the history of the practice of crushing wine grapes by foot-stomping.

Keep the Devil Where He Belongs — Under Your Feet | Sparkling Gems from the Greek

And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly….
— Romans 16:20

Are you tired of the devil blocking your way and causing all kinds of disruptions and problems in your life, such as problems in your relationships, financial woes, or health problems? How would you like to lift your foot high and then slam it down as hard as you can on top of the devil — pounding, hammering, trouncing, crushing, and smattering him to bits under your feet? Does that sound like something you wish you could do?

Stomping Grapes in Greece

Yesterday I watched a neat program, one of Samantha Brown's travel shows, this time about the Greek Isles.

She got to stomp some grapes, I think in Crete, or maybe it was Santorini? She is a delightfully unpretentious traveller, always on the lookout for a lighthearted adventure. I love her programs!

As a novice to wines, I admit my lack of experience. But I saw something that set me to thinking. The vat she was in held primarily red grapes, but they came along and poured in some white grapes as well. So this one was to be a blend, obviously. How can one learn what grape is used to make a particular European wine blend if it is one of those regions that goes by terroir rather than our American method of naming by variety? And, what about these wines that are not just grapes, but have other fruits added. I bought one in central Texas recently that was a blend of grape and wildflower elixir!!! Very different taste!

Stomping & Sipping in Napa Valley | Carolyn's Travel Stories

It was fun and it was different. And my feet were massaged in a way much different than any other massage. All of my thoughts were focused on just the stomping and smashing. But my feet felt more.

When I went to Grgich Hills Estate in Napa Valley, California, to stomp grapes like Lucy did on the “I Love Lucy” TV show, an iconic episode of all time, I saw a 3-foot diameter wooden barrel that was about 18 inches tall.Smashing Grapes with Feet

The big squeeze: Grape Stomp, music celebrate two years of business at DC Estate Winery in South Beloit

SOUTH BELOIT — At 17 years old, Camden Clute is too young to imbibe, but he can still have fun helping make wine.

The Machesney Park resident participated today in the 2016 Grape Stomp at DC Estate Winery on Stateline Road in rural South Beloit. Hundreds of people marked the two-year anniversary of the business by smashing grapes with their bare feet — the old-school way to make wine — and also to drink, listen to music and eat pizza under gorgeous skies in an Italian-like atmosphere.
