ASSOCIATION OF LIGHTING AND MERCURY RECYCLERS

Welcome to the ALMR

The ALMR represents the majority of commercial processors of mercury-bearing wastes in the U.S. and around the globe. Member companies perform the majority of all the lamp recycling done each year through a comprehensive service network to assist with collection, processing, recycling, and recovery of spent mercury lamps, ballasts, batteries, electronic products, and other wastes with hazardous levels of mercury.

Mercury Waste

Many cities and counties have developed programs to collect, recycle or properly dispose of household hazardous waste, including mercury-containing household products. These household hazardous waste collection facilities may also collect hazardous waste generated by small businesses that are exempt from regular hazardous waste management requirements. Contact your local Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHWF) for more information on accepting mercury-containing household and small business hazardous waste. Hazardous Waste

Under the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) regulations, a hazardous waste is a waste specifically listed because it contains certain chemicals that are harmful to human health or the environment, or it exhibits hazardous properties, such as being ignitable, corrosive, reactive or toxic. Hazardous wastes from schools are most often generated in science laboratories, shop and art rooms, photography studios and maintenance operations. Hazardous wastes found in schools can include solvents, alcohols, paint thinners, paints and stains, acids, bases, photographic chemicals, batteries, toxic metals, automobile fluids, pesticides and lamps.

Mercury Recycling

Heavy metals such as mercury, silver and lead are common in the academic and medical settings, but also have many common applications such as electronic equipment, thermometers, light bulbs and dental fillings.
In an effort to reduce the potential for contamination of the environment due to mercury, EH&S continues to pursue opportunities to remove and replace mercury containing devices with non-mercury devices as well as establish mercury recycling programs where the continued use of mercury is necessary. As part of EH&S’s mercury campaign, CUMC campus has exchanged over 400 thermometers for alcohol-based thermometers since 2002. Over 75 thermometers have been exchanged at the Morningside campus and Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory has exchanged over 31 thermometers since 2007. All thermometer exchanges are free of charge to the laboratories (compliments of EH&S).
