Spark plug wires have become nearly non-existent on many modern vehicles. With the introduction of coil-on-plug ignition, there is no long wire that is needed to connect a coil to the spark plug.

On engines that are equipped with a distributor or a remote coil pack, spark plug wires are used to transfer the spark from the coil to the spark plug. The wire can be several inches or several feet in length. Spark plug wires are typically constructed with a silicone jacket that keeps them insulated and resistant to high temperatures, and have internal shielding which keeps them from producing any electrical interference.

Spark plug wires (also called "ignition cables") carry high voltage current from the ignition coil(s) to the spark plugs. On older engines with distributors, the wires run from the distributor cap to the plugs, and come in different lengths to reach the closest and furthest spark plugs. The wire set also includes an extra wire that connects the center terminal on the distributor cap to the ignition coil (unless the application is a GM HEI distributor where the coil mounted inside the top of the cap).

How to Check Plug Wires With a Multimeter | eHow

Testing spark plug wires with an multimeter is a good way to verify they are in working condition. When spark plug wires fail the car will hesitate, stumble and jerk, especially going up a hill or under a load. If the car runs especially badly on a rainy day, that can be one sign that plug wires are faulty. Using an multimeter, or ohm meter, will verify if the wires are capable of delivering the required voltage to the spark plug, but a close inspection of the insulation and plug boots is also necessary.

Spark plug wires: discover how to change them on your own and save money.

Many people have spent hundreds of dollars with a mechanic trying to diagnose an engine performance or fuel mileage problem, only to learn that the culprit was bad spark plug wires.

Today’s high under hood temperatures are tough on spark plug wire insulation and the high-output ignitions found on newer vehicles have little tolerance for bad wires. Spark energy will take the path of least resistance and arc to whatever metal object is closest. Wires simply wear out, and a new set of wires may make a huge difference in how your vehicle performs.
