### How many protons does copper have? | Reference.com

Copper has been mined for several thousand years. It is reddish in color, ductile and malleable. It is a good conductor of heat and electricity, second to silver as the best conductor of electricity. Because of its conducting properties, it is used in the electrical industry. It is also used in plumbing, cookware and coinage.

1.2. Atomic Structure

An electron is one particle of atomic structure. A simplified model of an atom is shown in Figure 1-1. The model represents an atom consisting of three basic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. The protons and neutrons are coupled tightly together at the center, or nucleus, of the atom, and the electrons rotate in concentric circles around the nucleus.3 This model is called a planetary model because the electrons resemble planets orbiting around the sun. This is typical of what the world’s understanding of atomic structure was about 100 years ago. We now know that an atom is much more complex than this. Still, this simplified model is very useful for our understanding of the basic nature of current flow.

### What is Electricity?

Flowing Charges

As we mentioned at the beginning of this tutorial, electricity is defined as the flow of electric charge. Charge is a property of matter–just like mass, volume, or density. It is measurable. Just as you can quantify how much mass something has, you can measure how much charge it has. The key concept with charge is that it can come in two types: positive (+) or negative (-).

### Proton switch for modulating oxygen reduction by a copper electrocatalyst embedded in a hybrid bilayer membrane : Nature Materials : Nature Research

Molecular switches gate many fundamental processes in natural and artificial systems. Here, we report the development of an electrochemical platform in which a proton carrier switches the activity of a catalyst. By incorporating an alkyl phosphate in the lipid layer of a hybrid bilayer membrane, we regulate proton transport to a Cu-based molecular oxygen reduction reaction catalyst. To construct this hybrid bilayer membrane system, we prepare an example of a synthetic Cu oxygen reduction reaction catalyst that forms a self-assembled monolayer on Au surfaces. We then embed this Cu catalyst inside a hybrid bilayer membrane by depositing a monolayer of lipid on the self-assembled monolayer. We envisage that this electrochemical system can give a unique mechanistic insight not only into the oxygen reduction reaction, but into proton-coupled electron transfer in general.

### The Free Electron

THE FREE ELECTRON

After reading this section you will be able to do the following:

Explain how electrons are arranged in an atom.

Describe how elements maintain their electrical balance.

Maintaining electrical balance

Each basic element has a certain number of electrons and protons, which distinguishes each element from all other basic elements. In most elements, the number of electrons is equal to the number of protons. This maintains an electrical balance in the structure of atoms since protons and electrons have equal, but opposite electrostatic fields.
