FEVER OVERVIEW

Fever is a normal response to a variety of conditions, the most common of which is infection. Fever occurs when the body's temperature is elevated as a result of the body's thermostat being reset to a higher-than-usual temperature.

Nearly every child will develop a fever at some point. The challenge for parents is to know when to be concerned. This topic review will discuss the definition of a fever, how to accurately measure a child's temperature, how and when to treat fever, and signs and symptoms that require further evaluation.

When to Call the Pediatrician: Fever

A fever is a common sign of sickness. Under certain circumstances of high fever, a pediatrician should be contacted immediately.

Practice Guidelines: AAP Reports on the Use of Antipyretics for Fever in Children

Physicians should focus treatment on improving the child's comfort level and evaluating for serious illness instead of minimizing the risk of adverse effects from high fever. Parents should be advised to monitor the child's activity level, look for signs of serious illness, and encourage fluid intake to facilitate hydration. Improving the comfort of the child should be the primary goal over lowering body temperature. Most caregivers and physicians correlate high fevers with brain damage, seizures, and death. However, evidence does not suggest that lowering fever in children reduces morbidity or mortality, or the recurrence of febrile seizures.
