FBI — Evaluating Truthfulness and Detecting Deception

Evaluating Truthfulness and Detecting Deception

By David Matsumoto, Ph.D.; Hyi Sung Hwang, Ph.D.; Lisa Skinner, J.D.; and Mark Frank, Ph.D.

While interviewing the suspect who claims ignorance about an incident, the witness who saw it happen, or the informant who identified the perpetrator, the detective asks a question that will eviscerate the perpetrator’s story. As the suspect prepares to answer, he looks up and to the left, purses his lips, tenses his eyelids, and brings his eyebrows down.

Body Language vs. Micro-Expressions

Debunking the myths of "micro-expressions"

A Forensic Psychologist's Guide to Body Language: Decoding Meanings

Body Language

Joe Navarro, a former FBI Counterintelligence Agent and an expert on body language, reports in Psychology Today (2012) that many of behaviors people typically associate with lying—avoiding eye contact, looking up to one direction, touching one’s face, clearing one’s throat—don’t actually indicate deception. He adds that even experts in the field can only tell if someone is lying roughly 60% of the time, slightly better than chance.

Microexpression

A microexpression is a brief, involuntary facial expression shown on the face of humans according to emotions experienced. They usually occur in high-stakes situations, where people have something to lose or gain. Microexpressions occur when a person is consciously trying to conceal all signs of how they are feeling, or when a person does not consciously know how they are feeling.[1][2] Unlike regular facial expressions, it is difficult/impossible to hide microexpression reactions. Microexpressions cannot be controlled as they happen in a fraction of a second, but it is possible to capture someone's expressions with a high speed camera and replay them at much slower speeds.[3] Microexpressions express the seven universal emotions: disgust, anger, fear, sadness, happiness, contempt, and surprise. Nevertheless, in the 1990s, Paul Ekman expanded his list of emotions, including a range of positive and negative emotions not all of which are encoded in facial muscles. These emotions are amusement, embarrassment, anxiety, guilt, pride, relief, contentment, pleasure, and shame.[4][5] They are very brief in duration, lasting only  1⁄25 to  1⁄15 of a second.[6]

What is a micro expression?

Micro expressions are facial expressions that occur within 1/25th of a second and expose a person’s true emotions. These facial expressions are the same on every man, woman and child, regardless of their cultural background.

Why are micro expressions important?

Micro expressions cannot be hidden. They are shown even when a person is attempting to conceal an emotion, consciously or unconsciously. By being able to accurately interpret micro expressions, you will be less vulnerable to deceit, have enhanced emotional awareness, and have an edge in any given social situation.

However the study also found that poor sleepers were just as confident in their decisions, highlighting possible implications for security and policing. Participants were asked to decide whether two images, presented on a computer monitor at the same time, pictured the same person or two different people. The researchers set the task to differ from the face recognition tasks most of us encounter in our daily lives in two important ways: firstly, the people pictured in the images are unfamiliar. Secondly, the task did not involve memory, because the images appear on the screen at the same time. The authors noted that while most people would typically expect to perform well on these tasks, many are surprised at how many errors they make.
