Piedmont region of Virginia

The Piedmont region of Virginia is a part of the greater Piedmont physiographic region which stretches from the falls of the Potomac, Rappahannock, and James Rivers to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The region runs across the middle of the state from north to south, expanding outward to a width of nearly 190 miles at the border with North Carolina. To the north, the region continues from Virginia into central Maryland and southeastern Pennsylvania.[1]

Piedmont Virginia

Just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains lies the heart of the Virginia Piedmont, a land rich in history. Bounded by the Rappahannock River to the north and the James River to the south, the region was inhabited without the distinctions known to us by county names. Landmarks of creeks and rivers, fall lines and mountains, crossroad villages and large plantations gave those who lived here in the 18th and 19th centuries a sense of place and shaped both their migration patterns and way of life.
