Abductor pollicis longus muscle

In human anatomy, the abductor pollicis longus (APL) is one of the extrinsic muscles of the hand. As the name implies, its major function is to abduct the thumb at the wrist. Its tendon forms the anterior border of the anatomical snuffbox.

Extensor carpi radialis longus muscle

The extensor carpi radialis longus is one of the five main muscles that control movements at the wrist. This muscle is quite long, starting on the lateral side of the humerus, and attaching to the base of the second metacarpal bone (metacarpal of the index finger).

Rupture of the Extensor Pollicis Longus (EPL) tendon

What and where is the EPL tendon?

The tendon of EPL is located over the back of the wrist, where it bends through a tunnel, adjacent to a slight prominence of bone. This oblique direction is so that it can pull the thumb up and back, as if trying to “hitchhike”. Unfortunately, this arrangement makes the tendon prone to damage, from various causes, and then it can rupture. This is not generally very painful, but the thumb is then unable to extend actively.

Extensor Pollicis Longus

Insertion: Base of distal phalanx of thumb, dorsal surface

Innervation: Radial, C6, 7, 8

Action: Extends the IP joint and assists in extension of the MCP and CMC of the thumb. Abducts (radially deviates) and extends the wrist

Extensor Pollicis Longus

Extensor Pollicis Longus

Origin: Middle third of posterior surface of the Ulna and the radioulnar interosseous membrane

Insertion: Dorsal base of the thumb Distal Phalanx through the Thumb extensor mechanism

Function: Extends the thumb Interphalangeal Joint

Nerve: Posterior Interosseous

Artery: Posterior Interosseous

Musculus extensor carpi ulnaris

buitenste ellepijpspier[2]
