Rh disease | March of Dimes

Your provider watches your baby closely during pregnancy to check his health and for signs of anemia. In your third trimester, your provider may use amnio or a special ultrasound called Doppler to check your baby. Ultrasound is a prenatal test that uses sound waves and a computer screen to show a picture of your baby inside the womb. A Doppler ultrasound helps a provider check your baby’s heartbeat and measure the blood flow in the umbilical cord and certain blood vessels.

Can rh factors cause a blue baby?

blue baby syndrome rh factor

I turned blue about an hour after birth and was in the hospital about 2 weeks. My mom was told that it was because she was rh negative and I was rh positive, but several articles on the web state that blue babies are caused by a heart deffect. I didn't have surgery as a baby and have never had any problems since. I think the most they did was hook me up to IV's but I'm not sure. It's been 28 yrs but I've always been curious about what caused me to turn blue all over especialy since not that much was explained to my parents.

Rh Factor

Rh factor is also called "Rhesus factor" because it was first discovered in the blood of Rhesus monkeys (small monkeys from India often used for experimentation). Rh factor is an antigen, a substance which stimulates the production of antibodies to fight foreign invaders, such as viruses, bacteria and transplanted organs. A given individual either has the antigen already in their blood (they are Rh positive), or they don't (they are Rh negative). A patient's Rh status effects how he or she handles blood transfusions or organ transplants.

Childrens Health > Blue Baby Syndrome

Blue baby syndrome is an environmentally-caused children’s health issue. Blue baby syndrome, or methemoglobinemia, is an illness that arises when an infant’s blood is unable to carry enough oxygen to body cells and tissue. It is caused by a rise in the level of methemoglobin in the blood. Methemoglobin is a non-oxygen-carrying enzyme that is continually produced in the body. It is converted to hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying enzyme in the blood, by a red blood cell enzyme called methemoglobin reductase. Because infants under that age of six months have little methemoglobin reductase in their systems, an excess of methemoglobin, or methemoglobinemia, can be fatal if left untreated.
