Bloody Diarrhea in Cats
Diarrhea is characterized by frequent loose or liquid bowel movements. It can be caused by something as simple as a change in diet or a more serious illness or infection. Diarrhea may be sudden in onset and short in duration. It can also last for weeks to months or occur off and on. A single bout of diarrhea is generally not a cause for concern in cats-but if it persists for more than a day or two, it can lead to dehydration.

Blood Diarrhea in Cats

Blood diarrhea in cats is not a disease itself, but rather a symptom of some other condition. When a cat is experiencing diarrhea, it's best to first determine whether the case is mild or severe. Bloody diarrhea would likely indicate a more severe condition. Other important information necessary to reach diagnosis would include how long the diarrhea has been present, whether or not the cat has lost weight, presence of any blood, mucus or other matter, and if the source of diarrhea is the small or large intestine. Small intestine problems will usually produce dark brown blood, or melana. Bright red or rusty colored flecks or spots usually come from the large intestine. This is called hematochezia and indicates problems in the lower tract, including the rectum or anus. Large amounts of bright red blood in diarrhea may indicate an entirely separate problem.

Diarrhoea in the cat | International Cat Care

The normal faeces (stools) that a cat passes are brown in colour and well formed. If a cat is suffering from diarrhoea, the faecal consistency changes to become soft, liquid, or even watery. The colour may also change to become lighter or darker than normal.

In some cases, other signs may be observed - there may be fresh blood or mucus in the faeces, the cat may be producing a greater volume of faeces than normal, and there may be an increased frequency of defecation and/or straining to pass faeces. Some cats will also develop vomiting along with their diarrhoea, and perhaps other signs such as loss of appetite and lethargy.

Bloody Diarrhea in Cats
Diarrhea is an intestinal disturbance characterised by the passage of abnormally loose or watery stools (feces). It is not a disease in itself, but a symptom of an underlying disease or disorder. It can affect the small intestine, the large intestine or both. It may be acute (sudden onset), chronic (over a long period of time) or come and go.

Blood in Cat Stool (Hematochezia)

Bloody Diarrhea in Cats
It is always alarming when we discover blood in our cat's stool but in most cases the cause is relatively minor and transient. Blood in the cat's stool may be light, with just a smear or speck or heavy and it may be with or without accompanying symptoms. The presence of blood in the stool can be broken into two types:

Diarrhea Treatment Options for Dogs and Cats

If your cat or dog has diarrhea accompanied by fever, vomiting, blood in the stool, or lethargy, consult your veterinarian immediately, as these are serious symptoms. In these cases, hospitalization, antibiotics, and IV fluids might be necessary to treat your pet. Your veterinarian will choose specific treatments based on what caused the diarrhea.

Diagnosis: Kidney Disease

Many feline health conditions may manifest themselves in diarrhea—the abnormally frequent passage of watery, sometimes oddly colored (gray or yellow), and uncharacteristically foul smelling stools. In most cases, fortunately, the condition will be short-lived, either self-resolving or readily remedied with a change of diet. In some instances, however, diarrhea can be a manifestation of a deeply rooted, possibly life-threatening condition.
