Management styles are characteristic ways of making decisions and relating to subordinates.

Depending on the author, management styles have been categorized into two main contrasting styles: autocratic and permissive.[1] or the main categories of autocratic, paternalistic, and democratic.[2]

Laissez Faire Leadership

Laissez faire means allowing persons to do as they please. Managers that adopt this style give their employees significant freedom and autonomy. A leader with this style provides very little guidance to his subordinates. Laissez faire leadership is effective when employees are highly skilled or are experts in their field and require little supervision. However, researchers Lewin, Lippit and White found that this style ultimately resulted in lowered productivity, less cohesion and reduced job satisfaction.

They start in the car park, and I have on occasion seen the team vote to get a coffee and disappear. They are then startled to find when they return that there was an activity to do that they missed! Introduction

In management text books the three most talked about management styles are democratic, autocratic and consultative. Selecting the correct management style will often lead to greater motivation and productivity from your staff. However, it is not as easy as just 'picking' a style. Managers personalities and characteristics will influence the type of style adopted. For example a timid manager will find an autocratic management style difficult to adopt.

Transformational Styles

The theory of a transformational style of leadership was first developed by academics James McGregor Burns and Bernard Bass, who described in their books how leaders can bring about change in organizations and in workers. Transformational leaders possess a vision of where they want the company to go and charisma and skills to implement that vision.
